Electrified (nursery schools, ages 5–6, and grades 1–3)
What makes hair stand on end as if by magic? How can you move objects without touching them? And is it really possible to create small lightning bolts in a room full of children? The answer lies in an extraordinary machine whose history dates back to the early 1930s. It is the Van de Graaff generator – a device that demonstrates the power of electrostatics in action and can delight both children and adults alike. This machine can become highly electrified, and so can the workshop participants.
We invite preschoolers (aged 5–6) and pupils in grades 1–3 to join us on a fascinating journey into the world of electricity. During the classes, participants will discover that physics is not just about books and equations, but also about magic that can be seen and felt first-hand.
There will also be an encounter with the Plasma Ball – a glass ball filled with a mixture of noble gases, inside which ribbons of electrical discharges writhe.
Although the topic sounds serious – electricity, sparks and voltage – the entire meeting is completely safe for children and conducted in the form of engaging fun. It is a perfect combination of science, experimentation and spectacle.
