600 participants in the celebrations of Ignacy Łukasiewicz's 204th birthday
This year's 204th birthday of Ignacy Łukasiewicz, organised on 8 March, attracted a great deal of interest. Approximately 600 people took part in the event, which means that attendance was twice as high as last year.
The programme was designed for audiences of all ages and was based on the idea of celebrating through experience. Participants not only learned about the history of Ignacy Łukasiewicz, but also actively participated in workshops, demonstrations and educational activities that allowed them to better understand the significance of his achievements and take a broader look at the development of science and industry.
An important element of the event was a guided tour of the Warsaw Gasworks Museum, during which participants learned about the history of the Warsaw gasworks and the importance of gas lighting for the development of the city. The all-day thematic workshops, prepared in cooperation with the Geological Museum and the Pharmacy Museum, were also very popular. As part of the ‘In Ignacy's Pharmacy’ classes, participants made a cosmetic inspired by Łukasiewicz's pharmaceutical achievements. The geological workshops introduced issues related to oil, water and environmental protection, while the classes conducted by the Pharmacy Museum introduced guests to the world of old herbariums and traditional knowledge about medicinal plants.
Another important part of the programme were VR film screenings dedicated to Ignacy Łukasiewicz. This modern form of storytelling allowed participants to immerse themselves in the history of the oil industry pioneer and further embedded the event in the concept of education based on experience and engagement.
The children's art exhibition was also a great success. We received as many as 250 portraits of Ignacy, prepared mainly by the youngest participants (but not only!). The authors of the works received gifts, which were received with great enthusiasm and became an additional, very positively remembered element of the event.
The celebrations ended with the ceremonial serving of the ‘Light for Ignacy!’ cake, which brought the participants together in a symbolic gesture of remembrance of one of the most important figures in the history of Polish science and industry.
The high turnout and very positive reception of the programme confirm that initiatives combining historical heritage with modern, engaging education are meeting with growing interest from the public. This year's celebrations showed that the figure of Ignacy Łukasiewicz can be an inspiration not only for reflection on history, but also for active and meaningful shared experiences of culture, science and heritage.
